Yes, you got that right. The Star Trek director will now helm the next instalment of the renowned franchise due for release in 2015! This news comes amid speculations and rumours from industry insiders and its confirmation has since led to mixed reactions and responses from fans of the franchise and critics alike, with some doubting his ability to carry on the staying power of the franchise while others are positive about it.

JJ Abrams Star Wars Episode VII

A huge fan of Star Wars, the irony about this matter is that Abrams himself had originally said Star Wars isn’t the kind of film he could direct and that he would rather watch it as a paying member of the public.

“It comes with the burden of being that kind of iconic movie and series… I am looking forward more than anyone to the next iterations of Star Wars, but I believe I will be going as a paying moviegoer,” he said.

One thing we know for sure now is that Abrams will be anything but the moviegoer for Star Trek.

While Abrams is known to have notable sci-fi actioners to his credit, with the likes of Super 8, undertaking this film will ultimately be a test of his ability and vision. If this succeeds, Abrams will no doubt be that one person capable of directing both Star Trek and Star Wars. As this next project is currently in the early stages of pre-production, let’s take a seat and look out for Abrams’ latest sci-fi adventure Star Trek Into Darkness, the sequel to his 2009 hit, slated for release later this year.
