harry potter and the deathly hallows part i ver2

The final movie of the epic Harry Potter series has come to the cinemas, yet, Harry Potter fans in Indonesia are deprived of the chance to catch it. Enraged Indonesian movie-lovers cast hexes and curses on their government over yet another missed film.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which had its world premier on Thursday in London, is most likely not going to be screened in Indonesian cinemas due to the drawn-out tax dispute between the US studios and the Indonesian government.

Febry Lumbantoruan, a Potter fan expressed his anger and frustration on the government for being negligent towards the pleas that many Indonesian movie-lovers had put forward.

How much longer do we have to wait to watch quality movies in Indonesia?” the 30-year-old human resources officer told AFP.

Harry Potter movies have brought their magic into Indonesia, where thousands of Potter fans play the wizard sport of Quidditch on Twitter and cast charms and spells on one another on Facebook. What’s more? Fans even enrol themselves in wizard schools!

Indonesians, just like many other Potter fans worldwide, have been eagerly awaiting the concluding chapter of the Potter series where they would be mesmerized by the explosive battle between Harry Potter and the dark forces of Lord Voldemort.

I will start off by saying that Memento is very easily categorized as a non-linear narrative, meaning it’s events are not shown in chronological order. We begin the movie in classic Film Noir style, with a murder. This scene is the only scene in the movie actually shown in reverse and in slow motion. The following scenes in Memento are shown alternating between two separate sequences, one shown in black and white, and the other one in colour.

As many of you should know, Angry Birds is a game created by Rovio. Its gameplay involves launching animated birds at structures made of blocks with the aim of taking them and the green pigs within down with a catapult. Angry Birds has been downloaded more than 250 million times since its debut in 2009.

Now this indisputably well-received game is going to be transformed into a feature film. David Maisel, former chairman of Marvel Studios and executive producer of many movie hits like “Iron Man” and “Thor”, has put this into works.

Rovio has bought over Finnish animation studio Kombo which has already begun working on a series of short films involving the Angry Birds characters, leading to the feature film itself.

However, will this feature film be a massive hit like the game?

Pixar, one of the most successful studios on the planet, which has produced a dozen profitable feature films, is celebrating its 25th birthday!

Originally known as George Lucas’ computer graphics division when it was first introduced in the 1980s, the company took off after Steve Jobs, founder of Apple Inc., purchased it in 1986 and named it “Pixar”.

Just for it’s superb Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) alone, Transformers 3 deserves at the very least a good pass. But throw in the ingenious plot, excellent screenplay and delightful cast, and we got ourselves a high distinction.

Ingenious plot? How can the movie of a well known animated series have any ingenuity when the storyline is more or less known to most? Well, we may know or can expect that there will be an eventual happy ending, but what we don’t know are the little ups and downs nor the unexpected roundabouts scattered randomly throughout the movie. Everything and everyone, even the lovely Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, played a part in this exhilarating experience of a film, and not just with her good looks.

 one day

When I first heard that a movie adaptation of this book was going to be made, I was filled with apprehension. I am a strict believer of the quote “Don’t judge a book by its movie” but after watching the trailer, I must say I have high hopes.

Be warned though, I personally think the trailer shows too much of the plot.

One Day– The official trailer

The story revolves around two people, Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew who meet a day after their graduation and the rest of the movie will show the progress of their relationship– or lack thereof– for the next twenty years on the anniversary of the day they met– 15th July.

There is definitely something refreshingly fresh and realistic, yet depressing at the same time about the book and I am sure it will show well in the movie. Scenes shown on the trailer are pretty much accurate to the book, even to minor details like Emma Morley’s blue dress in which she wore for her ex-roommate’s wedding.
